FAQs - LiveStats - Real-Time Website

Can I use Cookies to identify a unique user visiting my site?

Using cookies allows a specific tag (the cookie) to be assigned to each computer that someone is browsing from. LiveStats supports a single cookie per Virtual Server.

LiveStats can examine cookies and use these to identify visitors and to provide "visit" counts. Since the web browser client sends the same cookie with each request, this can be used to identify a unique visitor.

Without cookies, the only information that uniquely identifies the client is their IP address. When dealing with multi-IP proxies, this could be likened to identifying what companies are sending information to your office by keeping track of the messengers.

When a client includes a cookie in their request, they are identifying themselves in a unique way that LiveStats can track.

Can I view more than 93 days in a report?

LiveStats 6.2 offers the unique "Query Range" feature. The 93-day maximum range was selected intentionally to allow companies to report both calendar and fiscal quarters. Of course any range with less than 93 days is also valid and often used to track events such as marketing campaigns.

You will notice on many reports that a 365-day graph is displayed showing a full 365 days of values. All the same, although LiveStats tracks as much history as you wish and displays 365 days graphs, its maximum reporting range is 93 days (a full quarter).

How bandwidth is calculated?

"Bytes transferred" or "Bytes Sent" are included in the "Recommended Log Parameters" for LiveStats. When configuring to record this information, your web server will record the number of bytes transferred for each hit made on the web site.

This information is used by LiveStats to generate detailed reports showing bandwidth usage, for visitors, groups of pages, and referrers.

LiveStats calculates bandwidth by adding up the bytes transferred for each hit in the log files and displays bandwidth in all of the reports described as follows:

1 KB = 1024 bytes
1 MB = 1024 KB
1 GB = 1024 MB

What report periods are supported in the executive summaries?

The Executive Summaries report both the last week and last month. These reports are intended to provide a single report that contains much of the summarized report information available in the LiveStats Reporting interface.

The "Summaries" tab in the Virtual Server Administration interface is used to select which graphs, tables, and summaries to include for each report summary.

If you require information for a "day", this information is available through the LiveStats Reporting interface.

Why are my visits higher than my page views?

A visit occurs when any request (a hit) is made on the web server by a unique IP address or Cookie. A hit can be a request for any resource served by the web server; it does not necessarily need to be a web page for a visit to be registered.

On most web sites there are situations that occur, which could cause visits to be higher than page view, for example when a visitor only requests images or downloadable files during their visit.

This could occur in the following situations, for example:

a. If there is a link from another site directly to your downloadable file
b. If an HTML e-mail is sent that includes images served from your web server
c. If another other web site is using your images and other, similar situations
d. If most of your visits are coming from AOL proxy servers

Why do I not see my Forecasts?

There are a number of reasons why you may not see forecast information. Because forecasts are only displayed in certain reports, the following items will explain when to expect Forecasts:

1. Forecasts will only appear in reports for the current day, week and month or ranges that include the current week. LiveStats does not try to predict numbers for periods that already have actual statistics.

2. Forecasts will appear 24 hours after the report is first viewed.

3. Forecasting is limited to the upcoming 7 days.
